HILO — Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the summit lava lake near the top of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National park has dropped significantly over the past few days, and Sunday evening it was roughly 240 yards below the crater rim.

The fall of the lava lake occurred as lava from Kilauea continued to inundate the Leilani Estates subdivision in Puna. Dozens of homes have been destroyed as of Monday morning.
